The Holy Crown
Perhaps the most recognised medieval object from Hungary is the Holy Crown, commonly known as the Crown of Saint Stephen. King Saint Stephen, the first Hungarian king received a crown from the Pope in the year 1000. The Crown dates back to the late 11th century, but throughout the Middle Ages it was regarded as the Crown of Saint Stephen.

Population: Hungary's declining population was 10,064,000 at the beginning of 2007. Mortality figures markedly exceed the number of live births every year, however the two indicators have converged somewhat in recent years compared to the late 90s.
Minorities: At present, the Hungarian law recognizes 13 national and ethnic minorities (Bulgarian, Roma, Greek, Croatian, Polish, German, Armenian, Romanian, Ruthenian, Serbian, Slovakian, Slovenian and Ukrainian). According to the 2001 census, some 314,060 Hungarian citizens - corresponding to approximately 3% of the total population - regard themselves as affiliated to one of the minorities. The largest minority is that of the Roma (with a population of 190,046), followed by the German minority (62,233). The smallest minority group is the Armenian (620).
Climate: The annual average mean temperature is 9.7 °C in the country and 11.2 °C in Budapest. The mean temperature in the hottest month, July, is 20.0 °C, and 2.1 °C in January, the coldest month. On a hot summer day the temperature may reach 33-38 °C, while in cold winters the temperature may drop to -25.0. -30.0 °C.
Geography: Almost three quarters of the country's territory is located on a low plain. One fifth is hilly with a maximum altitude of 400 meters, and approximately five per cent of the total territory of the country is mountainous, with altitudes varying between 400-1000 meters. The highest point of the country is the Kékes Peak (1014 meters) in the Mátra Hills. The lowest part of the country is located in the valley of the River Tisza, south of Szeged, in Gyálarét (78 meters).
